Chapter 20

Dane watched as the soil rinsed from his hands and washed away down the drain as he stood in the bathroom of the suite of rooms he now shared with Burke. It had been a satisfying morning for him. Working with Brandt in the fields, he had been impressed by the knowledge of Burke’s pack member.

Brandt was a soft-spoken man with a gentle smile. He was helpful and informative in explaining the nuances of the land of Andivoy and the crops that grew there. Dane was pleased that Brandt recognized his understanding of crops and respected that Dane was determined to prove himself to be a skilled farmer and hard worker. He wanted to contribute in the only way he knew he could at this moment in time.

Wiping his hands dry with the soft towel beside the sink, Dane wiped at his face to remove the streaks of dirt that were there. He would take the time to shower later, but now, he needed to go to his brother Alec. Thoughts of Alec’s sadness had been niggling at him all morning. It was time to go to him and find out exactly what was happening. If there was something that Dane could do to help him, he would.

Taking the jacket that Burke had insisted he wear from their bed where he had tossed it just moments before, he shrugged into it quickly. Checking the front pocket, he was relieved that the communication device that Burke had given him was still there. When he had pulled off the jacket to work with Brandt, he had settled it to the side of the planted field with such haste, he had worried that he had lost or damaged it. Checking the device, he saw that the power was still enabled and there was a light blinking on it.

Swiping his index finger over the flashing yellow light, he was pleasantly surprised when the face of his mate filled the screen. Burke’s angry scowl confused him. His displeasure was frozen on the screen. Touching the bottom of the display, Burke’s voice boomed from the device.

“I have tried to contact you four times this morning, Dane,” he said angrily. “I gave you this device so I could speak to you and know that you’re safe. I’m not happy that you’ve ignored each of my attempts to speak with you. We will discuss this later.”

Dane’s eyebrows rose in surprise. Burke’s tone was demanding and abrasive. Dane had to talk himself down from the anger that immediately slammed through him. He was not a child. Burke would soon learn that he would not tolerate being talked to in such a manner.

“I’m worried about you, sweetheart,” Burke continued, his voice noticeably gentler. “Not being able to talk to you is killing me. It’s also sending my wolf into a frenzy. Please understand. I need to speak with you.”

Dane’s heart softened at Burke’s admission. He knew that he had to understand and accept the nature of his sweet wolf shifter.
